Localization Breakthrough: The Logic Behind the Gas Showerhead Supply Chain Disruption

Time:2026-06-23

Abstract:

With the expansion of domestic fabs and the advancement of advanced process nodes, the localization of core process components has become an urgent imperative. This article explores the technical pathways, application scenario expansion, and competitive landscape of gas showerheads in the domestic localization process, based on current industry dynamics.

1. Horizontal Expansion of Application Scenarios and Diverging Technical Requirements

While gas showerheads are best known for their role in CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) equipment, their applications have broadly permeated multiple front-end process tools.

· The "Anchor" of CVD Processes: In CVD equipment, the showerhead is responsible for uniformly showering process gases onto the heated wafer surface. Products deployed in the CVD process flows of multiple domestic equipment manufacturers must not only handle complex gas ratios but also withstand high-temperature environments, placing extremely high demands on material thermal resistance and micro-hole patency.

· Extension into Etching and Cleaning Equipment: In etchers (Etcher) and plasma cleaning equipment, functionally similar components (sometimes called gas shower plates or electrode shields) are equally exposed to plasma bombardment. These applications typically require higher dielectric strength and surface flatness to prevent charge accumulation that could lead to arc discharge.

2. Localization Progress: The Critical Inflection Point from Following to Running Side by Side

Domestic semiconductor component manufacturers in the showerhead space exhibit a clear trend of "pronounced consumable characteristics." Since the showerhead is a critical process component in wafer manufacturing with high volume consumption, it has become one of the preferred breakthrough points for domestic substitution.

· Technical Breakthrough Direction: Leading domestic companies have secured important positions in the localization wave among domestic semiconductor equipment manufacturers. Represented by enterprises such as AMTD domestic manufacturers have made significant progress in understanding metal material properties and complex micro-fabrication processes through the recruitment of overseas expert teams and technical collaborations. For example, in the integrated machining of gas block plates and showerheads, domestic companies are gradually achieving a technical closed loop.

· Flexible Production and Rapid Response: Facing the constantly iterating demands of advanced process nodes, a single customized production model cannot meet delivery cycles. By establishing flexible production lines, domestic manufacturers can guarantee extremely tight dimensional tolerances (e.g., micrometer-level flatness) while enabling rapid delivery of multi-variety, small-batch orders—a key competitive advantage over international incumbents.

3. Competitive Landscape and Market Outlook

Despite domestic companies achieving phased results in showerhead R&D for 7nm and below process nodes, market competition remains fierce.

· Customer Stickiness and Certification Barriers: As a core component directly affecting yield, fabs are extremely cautious about changing showerheads. Once a specific showerhead passes process validation for a given application, it typically results in long-term supply lock-in. Therefore, companies that first penetrate the supply chains of mainstream fabs and equipment manufacturers will secure a first-mover advantage.

· Multi-Disciplinary Competitive Barriers: Manufacturing showerheads tests not only metal machining capability but is also a comprehensive contest spanning materials science, fluid dynamics, and surface physics. Going forward, only those companies that can simultaneously advance across "precision machining + advanced coating technology + semiconductor-grade material application" will remain invincible in the wave of semiconductor component localization, contributing Chinese strength to the security and stability of the global semiconductor supply chain.
